Dr. Pawan Dhawan recently started as the new medical director of the hospitalist program at Trident and Summerville medical centers. “Basically our hospitalists are physicians who take care of internal medicine patients who are admitted to the hospital. It’s one of the most rapidly growing fields of medicine,” says Dr. Dhawan, who served on the Society of Hospital Medicine’s Leadership Committee in 2011. Trident Health’s hospitalist program ensures that a physician is available on site, 24-7, to handle a patient’s immediate and overall needs. A hospitalist works as part of a team, coordinating treatment with the patient’s primary care provider as well as specialists, nurses, family members and other important players, so strong communication is essential. Dr. Dhawan plans to expand the number of hospitalists in Trident Health’s program over the next year or so and will continue to see patients himself. “That is the best part of the job.”
