Round one in the series between the two Summerville American Legion Baseball Juniors teams went to Summerville Green.
Summerville Gold suffered a 5-0 loss last week to its older counterpart during the first encounter of the season between the teams.
Summerville High School rising junior Alex Hursey only allowed one hit and one base on balls in four innings on the mound for Summerville Green to pick up the pitching win. Andrew Kenny, Bo Gobin and Chad Mathis also pitched one inning each for Summerville Green, which out hit Summerville Gold six to four.
Jack Bahen led the way for the Team Green batters, going 2 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Sawyer Bridges drove in two runs for the team.
In the bottom of the first inning, Summerville Green loaded the bases with hits from Daquan Wrighten and Gobin and a base on balls from Hundley McCurry. Then Charlie Fessler received a base on balls to plate Wrighten and Bridges drove in Gobin with a fielder’s choice.
Summerville Green added a run in the second when Jack Bahen singled, moved around on a pair of errors and scored off a hit by Kyle Smith.
The team closed out the scoring in third when McCurry and Fessler scored off a sacrifice fly by Bridges and a single by Bahen.
Summerville Gold did attempt to rally in the later innings.  Tim Brock took the mound in relief in the fourth and surrendered no hits and no runs the rest of the game while allowing only two batters to reach base. Meanwhile, the team’s offense put seven batters on base during its last four turns at bat, but stranded six of them.
Bennett Reeves led the gold team at the plate, going 2 for 3 and reaching base once on an error.
On Wednesday, Summerville Gold travels to Goose Creek. On Friday, Summerville Green travels to Goose Creek while Summerville Gold travels to Berkeley.
The rematch between the two Summerville rivals is scheduled for June 11. The teams are scheduled to go head-to-head a total of four times this season.
