Retired Principal Garland Crump will always have a presence at Oakbrook Middle School where he served as principal for 25 years.
On May 29, the school hosted a special program during which they dedicated the school media center as the Garland W. Crump Media Center. The dedication was attended by students, faculty and staff, school board members and school district officials.
When Dorchester School District Two opened the new Oakbrook Middle School in 1987, Garland Crump was selected as principal and he served in that capacity until retiring in June 2012. Brion Rutherford, current Oakbrook Middle School principal, told the audience that the school faculty and staff wanted to honor Crump for his years of dedicated service to the school.
Crump’s well-known passion for reading and his emphasis on literacy skills for students over the years made the decision an easy one.
Crump told the gathering, “I think you all know how much I love Oakbrook Middle School and the people who have made it a truly special place. My time there was a dream come true for me.”
