On May 24 Dorchester County deputies were dispatched to Bacons Bridge Road in Summerville on the report of an erratic driver, possibly intoxicated. Dispatch told the responding deputy that there was a truck that had run off the roadway with the driver ejected and lying on the ground.
Arriving on scene a few minutes later, the responding officer observed a pickup truck in the ditch with the driver sitting in the truck.
The driver told the deputy he was okay and not hurt. When the deputy asked the driver what had happened, the driver stated, “God did it.”
That “God had grabbed his steering wheel and turned his truck making it run off the roadway and into the ditch.”
The officer observed the driver’s pupils were dilated and asked if he had been drinking or taking drugs. The driver told the deputy “No, I just smoked a little pot.”
While the deputy was directing traffic around the accident scene, the Driver got out of the truck and stumbled to his knees, according to the incident report.
The deputy asked the driver to sit on the tailgate of his truck out of harm’s way and went back to directing traffic until the Highway Patrol could arrive to take over the scene.
A few minutes later, the driver tumbled off the tailgate and into the ditch that contained water.
The officer then asked the driver to remain seated on the ground, and the driver informed the office that he was “going to heaven today.”
The driver then stood and started walking toward a wooded area, refusing to stop at the officer’s request.
The driver informed the deputy “I am going to heaven today and if you try and stop me I will take you with me,” the report states.
When the officer took the driver’s arm to lead him back to the truck, the driver became aggressive kicking and head butting the deputy. Another deputy assisted and they were eventually able to get the driver under control with handcuffs at which time he was placed under arrest for Driving Under the Influence. The driver was told if he didn’t calm down he would also be charged with Resisting Arrest.
The driver continued to yell profanities while his Miranda rights were being explained. He then became enraged and had to be restrained with ankle shackles as well.
Deputies called EMS to respond and the driver was transported for drug and mental evaluation to Summerville Medical Center.
The driver refused to provide urine or blood for testing.
A search of the vehicle uncovered a plastic bag of green, leafy plant material and rolling papers.
The driver, also charged with Possession of Marijuana was transferred to the Dorchester County Jail.
