Thanks to caregiver Sherry Sheppard, Thrivent Financial is supporting the 14th Annual Race for The ARK with a $10,000 sponsorship.
Sheppard works as a Thrivent associate in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Her mother, who has early onset Alzheimer’s disease, attends The ARK, Alzheimer’s Family Support Services, three days each week. Sheppard wants more people who are dealing with this disease to take advantage of the resources The ARK has to offer.
“The ARK has changed our lives,” Sheppard explains. “I had to quit work to take care of my 63-year-old mother and was nearly at the end of my rope, not to mention my savings.”
Now, she is able to work full-time and her mother is happy and engaged. Sheppard says she will do anything to help The ARK, which provides a range of services to help families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia.
Since 1999, some 500 runners and walkers each year, from the Lowcountry and beyond, have come to Summerville each year to start their fall racing season and support The ARK. The 2013 Thrivent Financial Race for The ARK is scheduled for 7:45 a.m. Aug. 24 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 206 Central Avenue in Summerville.
The 5K run and walk winds through historic downtown Summerville. The first male and first female runner to break the course record will receive a $100 cash prize. The race also features a Corporate Challenge and Lowcountry Youth Challenge.
The Corporate Challenge encourages companies to field a team of five runners for $350. The team with the overall best time takes home the traveling trophy for the year.
The Lowcountry Youth Challenge serves as an early season competition for local high school cross country teams, but other sports teams are also encouraged to compete. The cost is $25 per runner, or $125 per team. Youth runners receive medals and can compete for age group prizes.
In addition to the title sponsorship, Thrivent Financial chapters representing Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton and Dorchester counties are also supporting the event. Other sponsors include periodontist Dr. Kelly Ford, Steinberg Law Firm, Trident Health Systems and Lutheran Homes. Sponsorships are still available from $50 to $1000.
The course is USATF certified. Registration is $25 with t-shirt or $20 without through Aug. 23.  Registration and packet pickup will be available Aug. 23 from noon until 6 p.m. as well as on race day.
