Summerville Gold was closer than it has ever been to beating its rival, but Summerville Green spoiled the upset Friday with a clutch hit in the final inning.
The Summerville American Legion Juniors Gold Team took the lead in the top of the first inning and held it right up until the final pitch, which Andrew Kenny slapped down the leftfield line for a walkoff double that gave Summerville Green a 5-4 victory.
“They went up on us early but fortunately Alex Hursey gave us five good innings on the mound to keep us in the game,” Summerville Green coach Monty Crowder said. “Then Andrew Kenny came through with the big hit that won it for us.”
After moving from first base to the pitcher’s mound in the second inning, Hursey threw 52 pitches in his five innings of work. He struck out nine batters while surrendering no runs and only one hit. The southpaw didn’t surrender a single base on balls, but did hit one batter.
Gabe Crowder relieved him in the top of the seventh and surrendered no runs and only one hit, an infield single.
Summerville Gold’s Johnny Watts led all batters, going 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs. Charlie Fessler led Summerville Green at the plate, going 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Fessler, Hundley McCurry and Hursey all reached base three times for Summerville Green.
With the help of some errors, Summerville Gold scored three runs in its first turn at bat. Olin McCurry received a bases-loaded walk to plate one run and Watts drove in the other two with a double.
In the top of the second, Tim Brock, Zack Bales and Bennett Reeves reached on a pair of walks and an error to load the bases. Then Charlie Tant received a base on balls to push courtesy runner Conner Morgan home for a 4-0 Gold lead.
But the first batter Hursey faced hit into a double play. Summerville Green then got a force out at first to end the threat.
Hursey opened the bottom of the frame with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice fly by Kenny. Hursey then scored on a wild pitch to put Summerville Green on the scoreboard.
The team cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third. Fessler reached on a single and moved around on a walk and a sacrifice bunt by Hursey. Kenny then put the ball in play to drive in Fessler.
The next inning Summerville Gold put two runners on base, but both were caught trying to steal a bag.
In the bottom of the fifth the lead was cut to 1 when Fessler doubled and came home on a base hit by Hundley McCurry.
Summerville Gold allowed one base runner in the sixth, but got out of the inning with a popup and two strikeouts so it was only three outs away from besting its rival. However, the outs were hard to come by in the final at bat.
Summerville Green loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of walks and a Summerville Gold error. Kenny then hit his double down the line to plate Crowder and Hundley McCurry and end the game.
Summerville Green entered play this week with a one-game advantage over Goose Creek in the League 1 standings, but lost to Goose Creek Monday. That loss left Summerville Green with a 9-2 record for the season.
Summerville Green hosts Moncks Corner at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Summerville Gold has a game at Moncks Corner Thursday and a game at Goose Creek Friday.
