Patriots fall to Sumter in championship game

Roger Lee/Journal Scene - Adrian McNeil, shown here hauling in a TD pass during the annual Air it Out passing tournament, is looking to see more action for the Patriots this season. -

The Patriots had their second straight Air it Out championship in sight Saturday but Sumter edged out Fort Dorchester by a single score to claim the 2013 title.
The Patriots’ Blue Team and the Gamecocks both started 5-0 in 7-on-7 passing competitions to advance to the Division 1 championship game of Byron Maxwell’s Air it Out Passing Tournament held at Fort Dorchester.
Fort Dorchester quarterback Coby Garrett completed nine passes in the finals to five different receivers including two touchdown passes to DeMonte Bailey. But Sumter completed more than a dozen passes and also found the end zone multiple times.
The Patriot defense had four players break up a Sumter pass and nearly made an interception that could have turned the tables on the Gamecocks but that ball fell incomplete.
“These tournaments are good for your skill guys,” Patriot coach Steve LaPrad said. “It gives you a chance to see if you have any guys who can catch the ball and gives you a chance to evaluate what kind of job your quarterback is doing throwing the ball. Football is still about blocking and tackling but this helps show you where some of your guys are.”
Stratford and Hanahan both went 3-0 in pool play and advanced to the Division 1 semifinals before falling to FD Blue and Sumter, respectively. FD Black, Ashley Ridge Cardinal, West Ashley, Berkeley and Bluffton also competed in the Division 1 bracket.
Wando claimed the Division 2 championship with a win over Palmetto Christian in the finals. James Island and Georgetown advanced to the semifinals of the bracket before falling to Palmetto Christian and Wando, respectively. Other teams that competed in Division 2 included Stall, Porter-Gaud, Ashley Ridge White, Northwoods and Bishop England.
Ashley Ridge Cardinal finished the tournament at 2-2 after being eliminated by FD Blue by an 18-16 score. Ashley Ridge White finished at 1-3 after being eliminated by James Island by a 22-21 score.
Fort Dorchester Black finished at 3-2 after being eliminated by Sumter.
