If you would like to sneak a little learning into your child's summer activities then the Dorchester Two Parent Involvement Centers can help.
The district has three centers and all are keeping summer hours to continue their mission of providing parents with tools they can use to enhance their children's learning through play. Parent Involvement Centers are located at Spann, Knightsville and Windsor Hill Arts Infused elementary schools and open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on select days this summer.
“We serve as a library for parents,” said Linda Huggins of the Spann Parent Involvement Center. “They can come here and check out additional resources to help children with what they learn in the classroom. In addition to books we have math games, LeapPads and Hot Dot Pens with flash cards to help them learn addition, subtraction, multiplication and fractions. We have a lot of games that families can use together. That is our purpose; to get families to connect and to work together.”
The centers also sponsor group activities that support academic standards. During the school year they offer story time for preschoolers approximately once a month.
This summer story time is scheduled from 9-10 a.m. on July 10 and July 31 at the Spann location.
Much of the material is geared toward early childhood education, but the centers also offer items appealing to older students and even adults. Huggins says the Brainchild handheld games are popular with students while several parents have taken advantage of the centers' Rosetta Stone online service.
“Rosetta Stone is a valuable tool for a parent wanting to learn a language,” she said. “We've had a parent use it to learn Japanese and this summer we have a parent using it to learn Spanish. It can be a great resource for someone moving here from another country who wants to learn English.”
The centers are available to any parent with a child in a Dorchester Two school as well as to teachers.
During the school year, the Spann center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Knightsville center is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8-3 and the Windsor Hill center is open Tuesday and Thursday from 8-3.
