Inspired by their mother, a pair of Summerville sisters completed their first triathlon Sunday.
Jessie Halajcsik, 20, and Dani Halajcsik, 16, participated in the latest Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series race held at James Island County Park. Joining them was mom Teri, 47, who is no stranger to distance races.
“Their mother has been an avid runner for as long as I can remember and has participated in these types of races for years but Sunday was a dream come true for her,” Bruce Halajcsik said. “Teri has a (jogging) stroller that she used to push both of them (all over the place) in when they were young so I know having both of our daughters compete with her in a race is special for her. In fact, before the race they took markers and wrote Dream Team on their arms.”
During each Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series event, partcipants swim 600 yards, bike 12 miles and run 5 kilometers. The sisters were already in good physical shape so training for the triathlon was mostly a matter of tweaking their workouts and spending some time in the pool.
“Jessie does the P90X workout and in December she ran a half marathon with her mother so she was used to the running,” the father said. “Dani plays softball and volleyball for Summerville so she stays in good shape. Leading up to the triathlon Dani and Teri started biking to the Miler Pool and doing laps several times a week.”
Teri, Jessie and Dani set the goal of finishing Sunday’s race in less than two hours and all met the goal. Jessie, a trident tech student working on nursing degree, finished with a 1:39:40 time. Teri, a Register Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Independent Contractor, finished in 1:41:14. Dani, a rising Green Wave junior, finished in 1:43:39.
Several other runners with ties to Summerville participated in Sunday’s triathlon.
Carole Murray of Ladson was the top overall female finisher. She came in with a 1:04:01 time.
Sandy O’Keefe (1:06:56) placed third in the Overall Female Division. Fellow Summervillians Jennifer Long (1:12:49) and Lisa Jones (1:15:13) were also among the top 20 runners for the division.
Ed Benzenberg of Summerville crossed the finish line with a 1:06:14 time to place 23rd in the Overall Male Division. Josh Hayes (1:08:12) of Ladson and Kendall Shows (1:09:35) of Summerville were also among the top 40 finishers in the division.
