Roy Meyers Junior Open rescheduled for Friday
Registration is still open for the l4th annual Junior Open Golf Tournament held in memory of Dr. Roy Meyers.
Originally scheduled for July 12, the Roy Meyers Junior Open for male and female golfers age 7-18 was postponed until July 19 due to inclement weather. To register, call the Summerville Country Club pro shop at 873-2210, extension 1. The entry fee is $25.
The tournament is formatted to appeal to a wide range of junior golfers.
Prizes are awarded in multiple categories. Four different sets of tees are used to accommodate less experienced juniors but the tournament, particularly in the older age divisions, is typically quite competitive.
Golfers age 7-10 will play nine holes and use special tees. Golfers age 11-12 will play nine holes and use red tees.
Older golfers will play 18 holes with those age 13-15 using the white tees and those 16-18 using the blue tees.
Practice rounds will be available at no charge (walking) and parents may play along those days for a $16 cart fee.
Last summer Summerville, Pinewood, Fort Dorchester and Goose Creek high schools all had representatives at the 13th annual event.
Christian Woods edged out JR Stark to claim his second consecutive Junior Open Championship. He finished with a score of 73 for a two-stroke victory in the older (championship) division.
Jackson Trigiani carded a 96 to win the Age 13-15 Division and Luis Thompson won the 10U Division after using a pitching wedge to drive the ball 64 yards for the first hole-in-one in the history of the tournament.
