DD2 to hold Common Core info meeting

The Dorchester School District Two Board of Trustees has scheduled a workshop to learn about Common Core. There will be representatives from several national and state organizations attending the meeting who will present various perspectives – both pro and con – on this initiative.  The Board invites parents and community members to attend to learn more about the Common Core Standards, ask questions and share concerns.
The board workshop is from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 23 at Summerville High School in the auditorium.
Board Chair, Gail Hughes, is hoping many will turn out to learn more about the mandated Common Core Standards.
“Although this is a board workshop meeting, we have invited guest speakers – state and national – and we hope a lot of the community will come and hear the pros and cons of Common Core at the same time as we hear them,” she said.
“The board will have questions and at the end of the workshop meeting we will open it up and give the audience an opportunity to ask questions.”
“We have someone speaking on the pros of Common Core and we have someone speaking on the cons. We [the board] want to hear what is good about it and what the complaints are.
“We can’t ignore Common Core but if we know the negatives we can take what is mandated and do the best we can,” she said.
Common Core math and language arts have already been implemented in the schools and, because it is a federally mandated initiative, schools have little choice. DD2 is hoping to get a clear understanding of the Common Core weaknesses in order to put in place ways to address them.
“Hopefully this will be a win-win,” said Hughes. “We need to partner with each other, listen to each other and educate ourselves so we can make sure this [Common Core] works.”
