The NEW (Neighborhoods Energized to Win) Fund of Coastal Community Foundation recently presented $39,660 in grants to 20 Lowcountry neighborhood associations in rural and urban areas of Berkeley, Charleston and Colleton Counties.
Established in 1991, the fund provides small grants ($500-$3,000) for projects that will help improve the quality of life and develop and sustain leadership within low-to-moderate income neighborhoods. Distributing over $850,000 in grants over its 22-year history, the fund has helped build civic pride while increasing the neighborhoods’ participation in the community improvement process.
Selected by a panel of community members under the guidance of Coastal Community Foundation staff, the 2013 grantees’ proposals range from requests for funding for equipment and instructors for physical fitness programming to grants for a neighborhood barbeque.
Included in this year’s recipients was Berkeley County’s Tri-Community Center, receiving funding for much-needed kitchen upgrades.
