A small fire broke out Friday around 1 p.m. at Everris on West 5th North Street in Summerville, in the ductwork that ventilates the factory. Old Fort Fire Department responded and Summerville Fire Department, Dorchester County Fire and Rescue and Dorchester County EMS also responded under mutual aid. The fire was quickly brought under control.
The plant’s “sprinkler system activated and did its job,” said OFFD Captain Ashley Norfolk, “It knocked down most of the fire.”
Crews stayed on scene for a few hours checking for any errant pockets of fire and ventilating the building. The incident was in the warehouse area so there was minimal water damage, said Norfolk, “most of the water ran out the door.”
Everris Americas (an ICL Specialty Fertilizers company) acquired the manufacturing equipment of X-Calibur Plant Health Company, in Summerville, in 2012. The purchase included a fertilizer coating line and associated handling, processing and packaging equipment.
The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, said Norfolk, and there were no injuries.
