Green Wave Head Football coach John McKissick holds his coaching staff in high esteem.
McKissick, who will celebrate his 87th birthday in September, returns for his 62nd season in charge of the Summerville High School football program. He is also the school’s athletic director.
At Summerville he has coached 10 state championship teams and notched 601 wins, which is more than any other football coach at any level. But he is the first to tell you he didn’t lead his program to all those victories by himself.
“I’ve got as good of a teaching staff as there is in the country,” McKissick said. “All my coaches know the game of football and they all played football. They do a great job teaching the fundamentals and getting our team prepared every week.”
The majority of his assistants have been with him for several seasons.
Joe Call, McKissick’s grandson, returns as the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Preston Giet returns to coach the running backs and Fred Edwards is back to coach the receivers. Also back to help out on that side of the ball are Chris Digby (offensive line) and Buddy King (tight ends/offensive line).
Britt Blanton returns to serve as the defensive coordinator. Other coaches back on defense are Comp McCurry (linebackers), Steve Wilson (secondary), Alan Bridges (defensive line) and Ken White (secondary).
Edwards, Blanton, McCurry and Wilson have all been on McKissick’s staff for the past 20 years. Call, Digby, McCurry, Bridges, Giet, Blanton and White all played for McKissick when they were in high school. Edwards was a Columbia High School athlete and Wilson played for Hudgens Academy.
King is the most recent addition to the varsity staff. He played his college ball at Clemson and before joining the Green Wave staff last year coached for Clemson, South Carolina, Arkansas and Goose Creek High School.
This year the Summerville JV team is practicing with the varsity. On Thursday nights, Digby will call the shots for the Summerville squad. Ian Lenke will head up the B-team program this season.
McKissick is also excited about the addition of Jerry Nettles to the program. Also a former Green Wave player, Nettles will focus primarily on developing quarterbacks at the B-team level.
