Fort Dorchester has added a coach on both sides of the ball but the rest of its varsity football staff remains mostly intact.
Steve LaPrad returns for his 11th season as the head coach of the Patriots' football program. Most of his varsity staff has returned and he has brought on two other coaches to help with the 2013 campaign.
“I've always had a good staff and this year's staff is as good as I've ever had,” LaPrad said. “It's hard to keep good coaches so I'm fortunate. All these guys work hard and they have done a great job this summer.”
Ian Rafferty returns as the Patriots offensive coordinator. Both he and LaPrad will be able to focus more on the big picture this season due to the addition of Joey Still as offensive line coach.
“With him handling the line Ian will move over to coach the running backs which is something I did last year,” LaPrad said. “Joey has experience so we are glad he's with us.”
Still formerly coached at Berkeley under Jerry Brown and at Barnwell.
Other coaches back on the offensive side of the ball are Ryan Charpia (quarterbacks), Eddie Cohen (receivers) and Bryce Lybrand (tight ends/offensive line).
LaPrad's son Brent returns as the team's defensive coordinator. Also back on the defensive side are Bobby Floyd and Greg Crum. Floyd will coach the linebackers and Crum will coach the defensive line.
Joining the defensive staff this year is Tracy White who recently returned to the South Carolina Lowcountry after spending 11 years playing in the NFL. White played as a linebacker and special teams athlete for the Seattle Seahawks (2003-04), Jacksonville Jaguars (2005), Green Bay Packers (2006-2008), Philadelphia Eagles (2008-2009) and the New England Patriots (2010-2012).
His primary focus with Fort Dorchester will be linebackers.
“He's living here now and wanted to help so we are glad to have him,” LaPrad said.
Chip Hall and Scott Campsie are back to coach the team's kickers and punters.
The Fort's JV will practice with the varsity this year so the calls on Thursday night will be by committee.
Justin Buckingham returns as the head coach for the Fort's B-team.
