Michael Wright knows leading a high school team isn’t a one-man job.
Wright, the new head coach of the Pinewood football program, doesn’t just have to adjust to a new team, he also has to adjust to competition for which he has limited first-hand knowledge. But several assistant coaches have returned to Pinewood this year and Wright is glad they are around to help him fill in the blanks.
“I have an idea of the way I want things, but I value the other coaches’ input,” Wright said. “We always talk. I want to cultivate conversation and communication so it’s not just me always saying this is what we are going to do.”
This year’s Panther varsity staff includes a pair of long-time Pinewood coaches, Don Carr and Bob Monnet. Carr will coach the defensive backs and help with receivers while Monnet returns as the special teams coach.
Two other coaches return for their second season with the Panthers. Edward Gilliard will coach the receivers and also help with the defensive backs. After serving as the defensive line coach last year, Frank Cuda has stepped into the role of Pinewood’s director of football operations.
“He has been in the Summerville community a long time and he has a lot of wisdom,” Wright said of Cuda. “We are thrilled to have him because he is a great resource.”
Dan Howell and Mike Power have joined them on the staff this year. Howell will coach the running backs and linebackers while Power will coach the offensive and defensive linemen.
“Dan is a former quarterback who is a good Xs and Os guy,” Wright said. “Mike played in college and has a lot of unbridled energy.”
