Race for The ARK started Owens’ running life

Every year Kathy Owens looks forward to the Race for The ARK. PROVIDED

Summerville’s Kathy Owens signed up for her first Race for The ARK to walk it with her son.
“We started walking but decided to try running a little,” she said. “It hurt, but I just kept going and even placed in my age group.”
Owens has been running ever since and has even participated in marathons and ultra-marathons, but because her family has been affected by Alzheimer’s disease the Race for The ARK remains dear to her heart.
Through its programs, The ARK provides hope and relief to families dealing with Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders. Its daytime group social program and caregiver support groups have helped hundreds of local families. The ARK’s NOAH Project reaches out to underserved and rural areas, mentoring those communities in meeting their own Alzheimer’s caregiver needs. The ARK also provides countless hours of community and corporate education and individual counseling.
The Race for The Ark serves as a fundraiser and awareness raiser for the organization. This year’s race is scheduled for 7:45 a.m. Aug. 24.
“Sometimes I run the Race for The ARK competitively, sometimes I run it with friends,” Owens said. “It is one of the best races in the Charleston area, certainly the best small race. They treat runners great, greeting them at the finish with water and a race towel—who else does that?”
At 51, Owens finished last year’s race in 23:51.
