Panther swimmers open season

Pinewood kicked off its 2013 varsity swim season with the Spartanburg Day School Invitational held Saturday at Converse College.
The meet started with a fifth-place finish in the Girls 200-Yard Medley Relay by Matti Easterday, Anna Rook, Emily Pelcher and Katie Smoak. 
Junior Elizabeth Soyka had a strong first meet with a 10th place finish in the 200 Freestyle and a seventh-place finish in the 100 Freestyle. Smoak had a personal best time of 2:57.06 and finished in seventh place in the 200 Individual Medley. She also had a 10th place finish in the 100 Butterfly. Pelcher placed fifth in the 100 Butterfly.
Easterday and Rook swam their first 500 Freestyle and finished seventh and eighth respectively. Sophomore Samantha Hilleshiem placed eighth in the 100 Backstroke.
The girls 200 Freestyle Relay team of Rook, Smoak, Soyka and Hilleshiem placed fifth and the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Easterday, Soyka, Hilleshiem, and Pelcher also came in fifth.
In the boys’ competition, the 200 Medley Relay team of Louis Easterday, Nathan Greenslit, Michael Saeger and Ray Mennetti took third place.  Eighth-graders Krish Patel and Connor Campbell finished seventh and eighth respectively in the 200 Freestyle.  The Pinewood boys had a strong showing in the 200 Individual Medley with Saeger finishing in second place finish with a personal best time of 2:35.26, Mennetti placing third, Easterday placing fifth, and Jacob Jurgensmeyer placing seventh.  Jared Snell earned a ninth-place finish in his personal best 100 Butterfly. Sixth-grader Noah Boykin swam to a 10th place finish in the event in his first varsity swim meet.
Freshman Ray Mennetti won the 100 Freestyle with a time of 58.54 and Connor Campbell swam to an eighth-place finish. Saeger finished in fifth place in the 500 Freestyle with Greenslit and Sam Danielson right behind him in placing seventh and ninth.
The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Danielson, Campbell, Patel, and Greenslit placed fifth.  Easterday placed fifth in the 100 Backstroke while eighth-grader Krish Patel finished in 10th place.  In the 100 Breaststroke, Greenslit placed sixth and  Jurgensmeyer placed seventh.
Finally, the boys 400 Freestyle Relay team of Mennetti, Easterday, Danielson and Saeger placed second.
