Ashley Ridge names Elite 11
This year’s Ashley Ridge Elite 11 includes players from nearly every position.
A few years ago Ashley Ridge football coaches established the Elite 11 program to inspire players to take their summer weight lifting and conditioning serious and to honor their hardest working, most athletic players.
“We have eight tests we use to evaluate the players for power, speed, quickness, and explosiveness,” said B.J. Bellush, who heads up the Swamp Foxes’ workout program. “The athletes are scored and awarded points depending on how they place 1-11. At the end of summer, the players with the top 11 scores are your Elite 11.”
Players receive points for their performance on Bench Press, Squat, Power Clean, Incline, Push Press, 40-yard Dash, L-drill and Broad Jump tests. The program serves as a motivational tool because players making the Elite 11 group receive both bragging rights and perks such as helmet decals and T-shirts.
This year’s Elite 11 are offensive linemen Steven Truelove, Keith Clark and Tyler Moss, receivers Dashaun Santiago and Donavan Thompson, running backs Sean White and Tyler Garland, defensive backs Woodrow Jones and Kendall Felder, defensive lineman Josh Spigner and linebacker Dylan Mariucci.
Ashley Ridge players lifted weights and ran conditioning drills three times a week this summer and Bellush says attendance was at an all-time high. The team’s coaches are hoping that work pays off on Friday nights this fall.
“Our football guys worked extremely hard over the summer,” Bellush said. “The guys have bought into our strength and conditioning program. Also, coach Ray Wilson was a tremendous help. His help and the dedication of the players are making a difference.”
