The Swamp Fox volleyball team has good depth and is looking to make a run at the region title this season.
“I have 14 players on the roster and at least 12 of them will see a lot of playing time,” Ashley Ridge coach Chi-Chi Hurley said. “The other two I will use sporadically. After finishing second multiple times, I would really like for us to place first. I feel we are on our way, but Summerville is always a challenge and Fort Dorchester has been strong certain years. Then Bluffton came into the region last year and won it.”
Ashley Ridge has six starters returning from last season, seniors Brenna Swartz, Jade Davis, Whitley Lewis and Megan Saltzman and juniors Sabrina Spencer and Katie Jordan.
“My seniors have really stepped up their game and they all have big jobs this year,” Hurley said. “Whitley will be my left-front hitter and she is a great server. Jade and Brenna will anchor the middle. Megan is a defensive specialist who brings experience to the back row.”
The coach is also excited by her young talent.
“Sophomores Abigail Dunlap and Chynna Hunt are players I pulled up from the JV last year and I think they are going to make a big difference this year.
Sophomore Meghan Carter transferred to AR recently and should help strengthen a back row Hurley says is already pretty strong.
“I have three back row players who are excellent passers and can also play the Libero position,” she said. “Our serving has been good this preseason. At our last scrimmage we played five games and only missed six serves.
Juniors Caitlyn Fecko and Morgan Bowers are defensive specialists expected to see a lot of action.
Rounding out the team are Kaitlyn Sullivan, who will play in the middle, and outside hitters Olivia Boykin and Madison Salam. All three are juniors.
“We are on the way,” Hurley said. “As long as they stay focused we should do well. We don't have a lot of height but we have some great jumpers. Chynna Hunt can jump out of the gym and Brenna Swartz is a high jumper for our track team. I have some good blockers this year and we can hit from all over the court. I look at this group and I see a bright future.”
The coach says her players need to do a better job communicating with each other, but she is pleased with the talent she has.
The Swamp Foxes finished over 500 last season, but were eliminated from the first round of the playoffs by West Ashley, a team Ashley Ridge beat in the regulars season.
The team opens its 2013 season by hosting West Ashley Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. The Swamp Foxes will host a tournament Sept. 14 and play in the Hilton Head tournament Oct. 4-5.
The Swamp Foxes Pink Out match with Summerville and Cane Bay is scheduled for Oct. 1.
