For the past nine years, I have been fortunate to volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Summerville. I work on the Monday kitchen crew with an outstanding group. Answering the call issued by my church to volunteer for the group was one of the best decisions I ever made.
Now, following extensive back surgery, I find myself on the receiving end of the meals.
Each weekday, an army of volunteers prepare and deliver approximately 150 meals to seniors who have difficulty preparing meals for themselves.
This service, however, comes with a cost. Meals on Wheels in Summerville, which receives no federal funding, is struggling to make ends meet. Tax-deductible donations are desperately needed to continue offering this free service to seniors, who have to be qualified for the program by their doctors.
In addition to a need for donations, Meals on Wheels needs volunteers who are willing to deliver meals or who are able to help prepare meals.
I have been fortunate to call Summerville my home for almost 40 years and I know the good people of this town will step up and help preserve this vital program for our seniors.
To donate to Meals on Wheels in Summerville, send donations to P.O. Box 592, Summerville, SC 29484. For more information, or to volunteer, call 873-8224.
