At times it wasn't pretty, but in the end Summerville's season opener was sweet for Green Wave fans.
Summerville avenged a loss in its 2012 season opener by handing Cane Bay a 28-0 loss Thursday. The Wave defense was impressive, but the team's offense blew opportunities to put the game away earlier than it did.
Summerville coach John McKissick said his team made more mistakes than he is comfortable with, but a 28-point victory isn't a bad way to start the season.
“We shut them out so I guess that is pretty good,” McKissick said. “I'm glad for the win and I'm going to try to forget about the mistakes and start correcting them tomorrow. Our defense was super, but our offense wasn't as good as it ought to be.”
Cane Bay coach Russell Zehr was also pleased with his defense after the game.
“Nothing happened tonight that we didn't know about,” Zehr said. “We knew we had areas we need to work on and Summerville was stronger than we were up front. We couldn't block them. … Our defense played great. They had to be on the field ¾ of the game and they didn't let up. We just didn't move the ball.”
Summerville held the Cobras to under 100 yards of offense. The Wave finished with approximately 300, most of which came off Sawyer Bridges' 14 completed passes. On the Wave's first possession, he connected with Pinewood Prep transfer Donnell Bryant for a 41-yard touchdown pass.
Summerville did move the ball some with its rushing game as well. Senior tailback Jacerie Ponder scored on runs of 4 and 25 yards.
Summerville's defense had several standouts. Lineman Matt Powell managed to pressure the Cobra quarterback all night and finished with a sack and several tackles for a loss. Defensive back Kevin Dickerson broke up multiple passes and was in on a lot of tackles. On the other side of the secondary, Darin Smalls had a good night and even picked off a Cane Bay pass.
Smalls also returned a punt 55 yards into the end zone.
Summerville kicker David Kennedy also had a major impact on the game, placing five kickoffs into the end zone. Cane Bay also started a possession at its own 20 after three of Kennedy's punts.
Cane Bay 0 0 0 0 – 0
Summerville 7 14 0 7 – 28
SUM – Donnell Bryant 41 pass from Sawyer Bridges (David Kennedy kick)
SUM – Darin Smalls 55 punt return (Kennedy kick)
