Cavs starting from square one

In 2012 the St. John’s Christian Academy Cavaliers reached the pinnacle of SCISA 8-Man Football by winning the Lower State Championship and earning a shot at the state title. The Cavaliers missed the brass ring, falling 58-42 to Wardlaw.
Nine months later it’s time to pick up the pieces with a new lineup and a new football coach in Matt Gilbert. Longtime coach Bill McCall resigned on June 1. Several key pieces of the Cavaliers starting eight graduated.
The Cavaliers will start over with a young and inexperienced team and Gilbert is ready to embrace the 2013 edition of SJCA football.
“We have 17 kids on our roster so far and almost half of them had never played football before,” Gilbert said. “We may not have football players but we have athletes and these kids are smart. There’s going to be a rebuilding process here, but they get it. They are easy to teach and they learn quickly.”
Gilbert has tabbed Southpaw Dustin Parsons as the team’s quarterback, the first time since 2006 the Cavs will have a quarterback under center not named Hammond.
“He’s got a good arm,” Gilbert said. “He’s a pitcher so he can throw the ball.”
Gilbert will count on experienced Cavalier athletes to lead the charge like Logan Brown, Walter Edwards, Marcus Johnson and Hunter Singletary.
“We will have a good understanding where we are as a team by our first home game,” Gilbert said.
The Cavaliers play their first three games on the road before returning for their home opener on Sept. 20 against First Baptist.
The 2013 St. John’s Cavaliers are Logan Brown, John Fondren, Walter Edwards, Dustin Parsons, Marcus Johnson, Colin Murchison, Reece Myers, Hunter Singletary, Luke Hutto, Byron Rodgers, Cody Dunlap, Austin Murchison Jantsen Robertson and Harun Scott.
