Panthers to host Ponds Invitational Saturday

  • Thursday, September 5, 2013

High school distance runners will get an idea of how they stack up against Lowcountry competition this weekend.
A strong field is expected for the third annual Ponds Invitational cross country meet hosted by Pinewood Preparatory School. More than 300 runners from 18 schools are expected to participate in the event Saturday. The teams that won the varsity events are returning in an attempt to defend their titles.
Stratford won the varsity boys’ race last September and will again bring some strong runners. The Pinewood girls also claimed a 2012 Ponds Invitational title and return with a formidable team that includes one of the top female runners in the state, Maryah Nasir. Other local teams registered to participate include Cane Bay, Fort Dorchester and Summerville.
“Bishop England’s Christian Widenhouse will be one of the faster boys there but Stratford and Fort Dorchester also have some strong runners,” Pinewood cross country coach Kelly Hazel said. “Academic Magnet will bring a group of up and coming runners. Then we have teams like Conway coming and I’m not sure what to expect from them so it should be interesting.”
The course has been moved to the area by the amphitheater at the entrance to The Ponds due to construction in the neighborhood. Parking will be available at the YMCA facility.
The event kicks off with the varsity girls’ race at 9 a.m. with the varsity boys’ race to follow at 9:30. The JV girls’ race is scheduled for 10 a.m. with the JV boys to follow approximately 30 minutes later.
