The Green Wave football team is expecting to face an improved Stags’ team when it rolls into Moncks Corner Friday.
Berkeley is coming off a pair of sub-.500 seasons, but fields a team stocked with 52 juniors and seniors with two seasons of experience. The Stags are looking to avenge a 36-12 loss to Summerville last season.
“We played a good game against them last year so I’m sure they will be jacked up and we have to go to their place this year,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “They are a lot better on offense this year and they may be better on both sides of the ball. They have good size on both sides.”
Summerville (1-0) is coming off a 28-0 win over Cane Bay while Berkeley (0-1) is coming off a 29-10 loss to Stratford. The Knights held the Stags to only 47 yards of total offense, but McKissick isn’t underestimating Berkeley.
“Stratford is one of the top teams in the area,” McKissick said. “Plus, mistakes like bad snaps and fumbles hurt Berkeley last week and we sure can’t depend on that happening this week.”
Reducing mistakes will also be a key for Summerville, which had 10 penalties, threw two interceptions and turned the ball over twice on fumbles last week.
Berkeley defensive back Dee Harley picked off three Stratford passes in the Stags opener so Summerville had better keep track of him this week. The Stags scoring came on a 26-yard pass from Joseph Dress to D.J. Witherspoon and a 30-yard field goal from Vance Bailey, both in the third quarter.
The Wave rolled off 351 yards of offense in its opener while holding Cane Bay to 102 yards. Sophomore quarterback Sawyer Bridges completed 15 of 35 pass attempts for 171 yards and a touchdown while Jacerie Ponder rushed for 108 yards and two TDs on 18 carries. Darrell Ford rushed for 40 yards on eight carries and Bridges had 30 yards on three carries.
Bridges completed passes to five different receivers. Donnell Bryan finished with 68 receiving yards while Johnston McCurry had 59, Sean Smith had 31, David Coccoli had 12 and Ford had 1.
Junior linebacker Mac McCurry led an impressive outing by the Green Wave defense, accumulating 12 tackles and hurrying the Cobra QB twice. Chad Wood had 11 tackles while Matt Powell had eight, including two for a loss. In all, Summerville tallied seven tackles for a loss.
Dwayne Pierce hurried the QB four times in the game.
