Swamp Foxes take down Wildcats
The Swamp Fox volleyball team opened its season Tuesday by defeating the team that knocked it out of the playoffs last year.
Ashley Ridge earned an 18-25, 25-15, 27-25 victory over West Ashley. It was a non-region win for Ashley Ridge, but an excellent way to open a new season.
The Swamp Foxes jumped out to a four-point lead in the first game, but allowed the Wildcats to rally. West Ashley was strong at the net the entire match but Ashley Ridge made the adjustments it needed to.
“After the first game I told them the only way we were going to beat West Ashley was with strategy,” Swamp Fox coach Chi-Chi Hurley said. “We had to go with tips, go down the line and figure out what their weaknesses were instead of going up there and trying to kill everything that came across the net.”
Ashley Ridge pulled ahead halfway through the second game and rode the momentum to a win.
In the third and decisive game, West Ashley pulled out to a 13-8 lead. But just when it seemed the Wildcats had all the momentum they needed, the Swamp Foxes came charging back to tie the game at 21. With the game tied at 25, sophomore Abigail Dunlap hit a shot down the line for a 26-25 Ashley Ridge lead. West Ashley then made a mistake to give the winning point to the Swamp Foxes.
“I’m excited,” Hurley said. “Them being so down and coming back to win is something we haven’t done a lot. For them to stay in the game like that was fantastic.”
Ashley Ridges’ scoring was spread around. Senior Brenna Swartz and sophomore Chynna Hunt were strong at the net. Seniors Jade Davis and Whitley Lewis and juniors Sabrina Spencer and Olivia Boykin were also major contributors.
Up next for the Swamp Foxes are road matches at Cane Bay Sept. 10 and Stratford Sept. 11. The team will then host Fort Dorchester at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 12.
