Patriots earn region win over Swamp Foxes
Home-court advantage didn’t help much Thursday as the Patriots’ volleyball team won a match at Ashley Ridge.
Fort Dorchester earned a 25-17, 25-12 victory over the Swamp Foxes in the Region 8-AAAA opener for both teams. The win is a big boost for the Fort because Summerville lost its region opener at Colleton County Thursday.
“The girls played really well and to their full potential,” Fort Dorchester coach Tarshie Burrell said. “Coach Hurley always has a good squad so we know we have to bring our A Game to every match with them.”
Senior middle hitter Jasmine Quinn led the charge for the Patriots, making six kills and three service aces in the match. She also had several blocks, including three that fell for a point.
Kira Ozegovich, Monica Mack, Kristen Lodge, Amanda Gluck and Meghan Sanders also had a strong match for the Patriots.
Whitley Lewis and Abi Dunlap led the Ashley Ridge scorers. Brenna Swartz and Chynna Hunt also had a strong night for the Swamp Foxes.
The two teams met again Saturday in the championship match for the annual Ashley Ridge Tournament. Ashley Ridge forced a tiebreaker game, but fell 2-1 to the Patriots.
On their way to the finals, the Patriots defeated West Ashley twice and triumphed over Colleton County, Ashley Ridge, Goose Creek and Berkeley.
“My girls have been working hard to finish games strong,” Burrell said. “They played well and came together as a family. They have put so much time in on the court to make each and every one of them better. Hard work is paying off and we are focused on one game at a time.”
Junior setter Amanda Gluck was named the Tournament MVP and senior captain Rachel Phillips also made the All-Tournament Team. For Ashley Ridge, junior Sabrina Spencer was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Up next for the Fort is a match at Beaufort Sept. 19. Ashley Ridge makes the short trip to Summerville on Sept. 19 to face the Green Wave and Goose Creek.
