The Berkeley tennis team has been on a roll this season, downing Wando, Manning and James Island during the first week of play.
“We have played extremely well so far this season,” said Coach Joe Harnage. “We beat Wando, and while they are young this year, they are always very good, very deep.”
For Harnage, his Lady Stags are deep and experienced, with the team's singles lineup logging five-and-six years of varsity experience.
“Many of these girls have been playing varsity tennis since seventh grade,” he said.
Against Manning last week, the Lady Stags shut out the Monarchs 6-0 over five straight sets, and didn't drop a game until third-seeded singles player Jill Funk took her second set 6-2.
Kristin Farmer and Elliott Huxford each won their matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Funk won her first set 6-0, and then her second 6-2. Caroline Lamprecht won her match in straight sets 6-3, 6-1, and Camren Tedder did the same, 6-1, 6-1.
The going was a little tougher against powerhouses Wando and James Island.
Both matches were tied 3-3 when the number one doubles team of Kristen Farmer and Elliott Huxford won their matches 5-7, 6-0 (10-3) against the Lady Trojans and a straight set sweep 7-5, 6-3 over Wando.
Singles winners against James Island included Funk and Tedder. Against Wando, Farmer, Huxford and Funk all notched singles victories. The Lady Stags' number two doubles team of Laura Futrell and Logan Ponce also put one in the win column against the Lady Warriors.
“Berkeley girls tennis continues to grow and now fields a team with 32 players including 10 from Berkeley Middle School,” Harnage said. “We now have quality senior leadership and numerous self-motivated players and coaches.”
The BHS team includes Kristen Farmer, Elliott Huxford, Jill Funk, Caroline Lamprecht, Camren Tedder, Lauren Jackson, Laura Futrell, Emma Futrell, Abigayle Ashabraner, Logan Ponce, Sara Gianelli, Misty Burgess, Ashley Morrell, Madison Santmyer, Tara Panzer, Mary Neely Jones, Jane Hulst, Mikayla Greenwood, Anna Brown, Mallory Evans, Morgan Cumbee, Emma Livingstone, Rebecca Hutson, Taylor Matthews, Olivia Free, Rya Glasshof, Britney Cox, Grace Lewis, Lily Graham, Evan Rincon, Ashley Reichard and Baylee Carmon.
The Lady Stags take on Summerville on Wednesday and on Sept. 23 host Ashley Ridge. Berkeley faces Orangeburg Wilkinson on Sept. 24, and hits the road Sept. 26 to play Hilton Head.
