Swamp Foxes face Knights’ team that is on a roll

  • Thursday, September 19, 2013

The Swamp Foxes travel to Goose Creek Friday to take on an experienced Stratford squad.
The Knights are a well-balanced team that is off to a 3-0 start this season. Ashley Ridge, at 0-3, is still looking for its first win.
“Stratford has a very good quarterback in Jacob Park who is really accurate and also runs well,” Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker said. “He is an Elite 11 quarterback and for good reason. They have other weapons as well but he is the main threat. We will have to get pressure on him in creative ways.”
Park has already thrown for more than 870 yards and eight touchdowns this year. However, the QB is just one part of a senior class that has been looked upon for a number of years as one that could get Stratford back where it used to be. There are a lot of playmakers in that 20-man class and last year they helped the Knights have their best season since 2006.
Stratford has some skilled running backs and isn’t afraid to put the ball in their hands if their oppononets limit passing options.
Ray Stackley is one of the most successful coaches in the state and, as usual, he has put together a team that is strong on both sides of the ball.
“Their defense is experienced,” Walker said. “When I watch film on them, I see a lot of players who played against us when they were just freshmen and they were good then.”
The Swamp Foxes have several skilled athletes, but have struggled putting a complete game together this season. Two of their three losses are to teams that enter play Friday undefeated.
Last week junior running back Tyler Garland had a 100-yard rushing night in a 20-10 loss to West Ashley.
The Knights are a very tough test, but if Ashley Ridge can break its losing streak anything is still possible. The Swamp Foxes also got out to a slow start in 2011 but ended up winning their region and advancing to the semi-finals of the state playoffs.
