The Pinewood Prep football team traveled to Cardinal Newman Friday and fell 38-3 to a strong Cardinal team.
A Pinewood turnover early in the game led to a Cole Halverson TD pass to Stefone Brown and Cardinal Newman took the lead. The Cardinals were able to score again on a 22-yard field goal by Cam Bohannon. Then a Pinewood fumble was returned 68 yards by Evan Dubois for a 17-0 Cardinal Newman lead by the end of the first quarter.
By halftime the game was out of reach as Cardinal Newman scored two more touchdowns to extend the lead to 31-0.
Pinewood had a better second half and only allowed the Cardinals to score one more touchdown for the remainder of the game. Senior kicker Kevin Weber was able to put some points on the board for the Panthers in the third quarter as he kicked from 32 yards out.
“I was proud of how we played and defensively we managed to have a couple of stops,” Pinewood coach Michael Wright said. “We need to have more consistency and stop giving the other teams a short field to work with. They scored 21 of their points from turnovers and that hurt us.”
Defensively, Andrew Latham had a solid game with eight solo tackles. Zach Latham and Alex Nelson had four each and Kevin Weber had four solo tackles and an interception.
On the other side of the ball, Lesley Redden ran hard and quarter back Lewis Vaughn passed for 123 yards.
“Lewis is doing the things he should and understanding the game better and better each week,” Wright said.
Pinewood is now 0-4 and returns home this week to take on Augusta Christian. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Friday.
