Ashley Chapman speaks to the Summerville Oakbrook Breakfast Rotary Club Monday morning. He is the director of the Old Dorchester State Park. The town was a thriving commercial center to which ships sailed up to the Ashley to trade. The town eventually was abandoned when more land at a site in Georgia, south of Savannah, was chosen. “Everyone just picked up and moved away,” Chapman said.
