Defensive players were key on four out of six Fort Dorchester scores Friday as the Patriots earned a 41-13 victory over Wando.
“We played well,” Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said. “We’ve been ridden with injuries on defense since the season began and going into that game we were much closer to being well. I think that was the big difference. We also ran the ball well.”
The Patriot defense scored the first touchdown and then defensive tackle Eurndraus Bryant was brought in at running back and scored three of the Fort’s five other TDs.
Fort Dorchester (3-2) held Wando (2-4) to less than less than 200 yards of total offense and forced three Warrior turnovers. The Patriots recorded five quarterback sacks and three other tackles for loss.
The Fort got on the scoreboard when junior D.J. Commodore blocked a Wando punt and junior Jerod Lacy recovered the ball in the Warriors’ end zone.
Then the Fort added three TD runs before the half to take a 28-0 lead into the third quarter. Bryant, a 6-2, 340-pound junior, scored on runs of 5 and 2 yards and senior Nahshon Cyrus scored on a run from 12 yards out.
In the second half, Wando tailback Kenny Waring scored a pair of TDs off runs of 44 and 3 yards. However, Fort Dorchester answered those scores with a 3-yard TD run from Bryant and a 3-yard TD run from Cyrus.
“I was pleased with our offensive line and running backs,” LaPrad said. “While Eurndraus isn’t as good a runner as our quarterback and other running backs, he can do everything they can do. It’s amazing how agile he is for his size. He can cut and just do all the athletic things you want a guy running the ball to do.”
Bryant tallied more than 30 rushing yards in the game. Both Cyrus and Waring finished with approximately 90 rushing yards.
This week, the Patriots travel to face West Ashley. The Wildcats enter the game with a 4-1 record after falling to Summerville Friday.
