Fort Dorchester has to face a one-loss football team on the road this week.
West Ashley (4-1) hosts Fort Dorchester (3-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The Wildcats are off to their best start in school history. After winning their first four games over Bishop England, James Island, Ashley Ridge and Colleton County, the Wildcats fell 35-14 to Summerville last week.
“They are scary,” Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said. “West Ashley plays with a lot of confidence and their athletes are as good as anyone’s in the state. We are preparing for them just like we’ve prepared for the past five games.”
Wildcat quarterback Pedro Manigault is a returning starter who has given teams a fit this season.
“He is 6-5 and 205 pounds,” LaPrad said of Manigault. “That’s a formula for success. Hopefully, we will be able to put some pressure on him.”
Receiver Anthony Vincelli and tailback Marquize Jenkins have also had success moving the ball for West Ashley this season.
The West Ashley defense returned seven starters this season so the Wildcats are also tough on that side of the ball.
But Fort Dorchester also has talent on both sides of the ball. Patriot QB Kobe Garrett has great speed and has moved the ball through the air this season. Fort Dorchester has two running backs who are having an excellent season.
Fullback Eurndraus Bryant is hard to stop around the goal line. Last week, he scored three touchdowns during a 41-13 victory over Wando.
The Patriot defense has battled injuries this year, but is almost back to full strength. That seemed to make a difference last week.
The Fort limited Wando, which has one of the top running backs in the state, to less than 200 yards of offense. The Patriots also forced three turnovers.
Fort punter Corey Rawlings is averaging around 35 yards per punt so the Wildcats may face some long fields.
“After West Ashley we open our region schedule so we would like to take some momentum into that,” LaPrad said. “Of course West Ashley starts their region schedule that week as well so I’m sure they are thinking the same thing.”
The teams have had no common opponents this season. The Fort’s wins are over Carolina Forest, Cane Bay and Wando. The Patriot losses were to Goose Creek and Stratford, two undefeated teams.
