The Swamp Foxes have a long road trip this week.
Ashley Ridge (1-4) travels to West Florence (3-2) Friday to take on the Knights.
“They are very athletic and have a very elusive quarterback who we had trouble containing last year,” Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker said. “We have to contain him to have a chance. Defensively they show multiple looks so our offense will have to be ready for whatever they come out in. Our offense has moved the ball effectively the last couple of games so I hope that they can continue to do that.”
After opening the season with back-to-back losses to Camden (20-23) and Myrtle Beach (21-42), the Knights have won three straight over Lugoff-Elgin (31-14), Darlington (30-27) and Wilson (44-20). Ashley Ridge lost its first four games to Goose Creek, Wando, West Ashley and Stratford, but then picked up a win last week against Cane Bay.
The Swamp Fox offense has some explosive players, as does Ashley Ridge’s special teams units.
The Swamp Foxes have scored more than 25 points in all their games except for a 20-10 loss to West Ashley. However, the Ashley Ridge defense is giving up too many points.
Last week, the Swamp Foxes rolled off 300 yards of offense in the first half while holding Cane Bay to 43 yards, but struggled to stop a Cobra team that came out of the locker room passing.
Ashley Ridge QB Chandler Avenel passed for approximately 250 yards in the game while receivers Donavan Thompson and Sean White and running back Tyler Garland had success both on the ground and through the air. Thompson finished with 148 yards of offense while White had 105 yards and Garland had 96 yards.
Misdirection plays have worked well for the Swamp Foxes this season, much to the delight of the loyal Ashley Ridge fans.
The Swamp Fox defense did return several experienced players this season but the unit has yet to give Walker the complete-game effort he thinks they are capable of.
Safety Kendall Felder is a player opponents have to account for. Last week, he made an interception that led to an Ashley Ridge score.
