Pinewood Preparatory School seniors Sean Carter and Logan Dwyer join 208 South Carolina Semifinalists named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists for 2014.
They emerged from more than 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools who took the preliminary qualifying test. In addition, senior Lucas Owens was named a National Merit Commended Scholar.
Carter and Dwyer will continue in the competition for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships, worth about $35 million, that will be offered next spring.
To become a Finalist, each Semifinalist must submit a detailed scholarship application, maintain an outstanding academic record in their senior year, be endorsed by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm their earlier performance on the qualifying test.
