Garland leads Swamp Foxes past Knights
The Swamp Foxes moved the ball efficiently and kept West Florence off the scoreboard to notch its second consecutive victory.
With junior running back Tyler Garland leading the way, Ashley Ridge (2-4) earned a 20-0 win at West Florence (3-3) Friday. Garland carried the ball 32 times for 167 rushing yards and a touchdown and made three receptions for 68 yards and two TDs.
Of course, Garland didn’t do all the work.
“We moved the chains and our time of possession was considerably more than West Florence,” Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker said. “ Our offensive line did a great job blocking against a really athletic defense.”
Junior quarterback Chandler Avenel completed 9 of 13 pass attempts for 155 yards, including the two TD passes to the tailback.
“Charles Fredrick, Donavan Thompson and Mitch Nixon made some big catches for first downs during the game,” Walker said. “Coach Tee Newman and his offensive staff do a great job each week preparing our players for what to expect and giving them a chance to succeed and our players did that Friday.”
The first Swamp Fox possession, though, was all about Garland. He was the playmaker on nearly all of the snaps on the drive. Garland hauled in a 19-yard pass from Avenel to set up a first and goal and then ran into the end zone from 5 yards out for the game-winning score.
With just more than a minute remaining in the first half, Garland scored on a five-yard pass from Sean White for a 19-0 Swamp Fox lead.
The tailback’s final score came in the fourth quarter when Avenel dumped off a short pass and Garland sprinted to the end zone for a 43-yard touchdown.
The Ashley Ridge defense was also impressive. Walker said he can’t remember the team’s defense ever having a better performance.
“The defense held a talented offense to 117 yards passing and 106 yards rushing on the night and had two turnovers,” Walker said. “Our seniors on that side of the ball - Thomas Cooper, Josh Spigner, Bradley McLaughlin, Jared Campagnone, Tyler Moore, and Kendall Felder - led the way. Coach Brad Thomas and his staff put together a great plan and our kids executed it.”
The victory comes on the heels of a 27-20 win over Cane Bay last week and is exactly what the Swamp Foxes needed considering they open region play this week. Ashley Ridge hosts Colleton County at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
