Fort Dorchester outgained Summerville Friday but the Green Wave owned the Red Zone in a 24-7 victory over its cross-town rival.
The Patriots (4-3) scored on their first possession but the Green Wave (5-2) made three goal-line stands and forced four turnovers to keep the Fort off the scoreboard for the rest of the game, which was the Region 8-AAAA opener for both teams.
“We let them drive the length of the field on us a couple of times but we stopped them when we had to,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “Of course they helped us at times, but what counts is we got more points than they did. Fort Dorchester has a real good football team so I'm pleased with our players and pleased to get a win.”
After stopping Summerville on its first possession, Fort Dorchester mounted a 73-yard scoring drive. Patriot quarterback Kobe Garrett had a 48-yard run to set up a first-and-goal and then tailback Nahshon Cyrus capped the drive with a 2-yard TD run.
Summerville responded with an 81-yard scoring drive. Sophomore running back Chris Felder had a pair of nice runs on the drive and tight end Sean Smith made two receptions to help sustain the drive. Senior tailback Jacerie Ponder, who sat out last week's game at Stratford, capped the drive with a 36-yard TD run to tie the game.
Fort Dorchester began a drive late in the first quarter that carried into the second quarter and covered 95 yards. The Patriots drove all the way to the Summerville 1-yard line but on fourth down Summerville defensive back Daniel Smith tackled Garrett in the backfield to prevent the TD and return possession to the Green Wave.
Summerville then drove 62-yards to score on a 45-yard field goal by David Kennedy.
The Patriots responded with a 79-yard drive but on a third-and-goal from the one-half yard line Summerville's Joshua Orr intercepted a pass in the end zone and Summerville took a 10-7 lead into the half.
The Patriots drove all the way to the Summerville 4 on their first possession of the second half, but a turnover cost them the score. The Patriot coaches decided to give fullback/defensive tackle Eurndraus Bryant a shot at the end zone but he fumbled the ball and Summerville defensive back Chad Wood recovered and returned the ball 95 yards into the end zone for a 10-point Summerville lead once Kennedy sent the extra-point kick through the up rights.
On Fort Dorchester's next possession, linebacker Mac McCurry deflected a Garrett pass and defensive back Kevin Dickinson intercepted the ball to give the Green Wave a short field.
A few plays later, Ponder scored his second touchdown of the night on a 5-yard run. Kennedy added the PAT kick for a 24-7 margin only 4-minutes and 46 seconds into the third quarter.
“I don't know what to say,” Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said. “We haven't done that all year but we did it tonight. We ran up and down the field on them and thought we had a great game plan but during those five minutes everything that could go wrong went wrong. When you get down like that against a good ball club, it's tough to recover.”
