Taylor Griffith/Journal Scene The Domestic Violence Taskforce vigil, held Tuesday evening, featured several musical performances. Bagpiper Karen McKerihan played “Amazing Grace” in remembrance of unreported victims and survivors of domestic violence.

In commemoration of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the sisters of the Delta Sigma Theta Summerville Alumnae chapter hosted a prayer vigil and silent march Tuesday night in Hutchinson Square.

About 60 people gathered to witness the event, which included several music performances, a poetry reading, prayers, and stories of domestic violence as told by victims.

Cindy Schmidt, a board member from the local shelter for battered women and their children, My Sister’s House, also spoke to the crowd and provided information on emergency resources for those affected by domestic violence.

South Carolina was ranked No. 2 in the nation for the number of women murdered by men in 2012, she said. The state has remained in the top 10 ranking for the past 15 years.

Chapter President Pamela Goodwine-Glover led a silent candlelit march around the square to honor the victims and conclude the event.

Those who are victims of domestic violence may call 911 for emergency services or 211 to speak to a victim’s advocate.
