Cane Bay High School sophomores Brooke Adams and Paul Peart have been selected to perform with some of the state’s best.
Adams, a viola player, was selected as one of 20 high school students in the Charleston Symphony Orchestra’s “Share the Stage Contest 2013-2014.”
Applicants were told to submit audition tapes on YouTube and the CSO’s leaders chose the winners.
Adams heard the good news from CBHS orchestra teacher Linda Versprille that was emailed by the CSO.
“Part of the reason I did it was looking ahead to college applications,” Adams said. “It was exciting news when she told me and I was very happy.”
The first sectional for the violas is in a couple weeks she said and the performance will be Nov.8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul in Charleston.
Peart, a violinist, was selected to the South Carolina Music Educators Association 9-10 Region Orchestra.
The regional orchestra will perform on Nov.17 in Myrtle Beach. Afterwards an all-state orchestra will be chosen. A year after making the all-region orchestra, Peart is determined to make it to all-state this fall.
“I have more confidence than I did last year. I worked harder and harder this year to make sure I get the chair that I want.”
The applicants performed in a blind audition at Fort Dorchester High School and played scales, sight readings, and solo excerpts. Peart also received the news from Versprille and hopes his run doesn’t stop at all-region.
“I’m very happy that I improved so much from last year,” he said. “I’m confident that I can make all-state.”
