The Pinewood Girls’ cross country team was crowned state champion at the SCISA AAA Cross Country Championships held Saturday at Heathwood Hall School in Columbia.

The Panthers had a strong meet all around as the Pinewood boys’ team finished as the state runner-up for a third straight year.

Pinewood eighth-grader Maryah Nasir placed second overall with a time of 19 minutes, 2 seconds and sophomore Katie Black placed fourth overall with a 19:23 time. Next in was senior Megan Kuhn (5th) in 19:28, Emily Shuler in 20:04, Sallie Limehouse in 20:05, Isabelle Greenstreet in 20:42 and Kasey Grossman in 20:59.

All seven members of the team ran under 21 minutes and the top five Panthers placed in the top 11 runners.

Nasir, Black, Kuhn and Shuler were all named to the All-state team.

“It was an amazing win,” Pinewood coach Kelly Hazel said. “For the girls, the strategy was to run man for man and position themselves in a good way to earn points and they did exactly that. The coaches and I are very proud of the way they all ran their race. They put everything out on the course and handled all that came their way.”

The Pinewood boys finished as close to the winners as they ever have, coming in only 25 points behind 2013 champion Porter-Gaud. Pinewood senior Mason Hazel placed second overall with a time of 16:11 to set a new Pinewood school record and Joseph Siegel placed fourth overall with a time of 16:53. Both runners were named to the All-State team.

Next in was senior Jin Kim running his best state meet time of 17:27. Jake Birdsong finished in 18:25 and Matthew Stice in 18:27. Thomas Osborne came in at 20:30 and Ethan Yohe came in at 21:26.

“We did all we could do,” Hazel said. “Congratulations to everyone. We have all worked very hard this season and special thanks to those that came out to support the team.”
