Summerville Police Department PFC E. McCreary was in the right place at the right time for a 14-year-old at Alston Middle School.
The cafeteria manager contacted McCreary to say a child had “some sort” of medical issue. The child’s eyes were bloodshot and watering and although he was conscious, he did not appear to be breathing.
McCreary said he approached the student, asked twice if he was choking and the student did not respond. McCreary turned him around and performed the Heimlich Maneuver on the student dislodging what appeared to be a piece of chicken from his throat.
McCreary asked the school nurse to check the student and she noted he appeared to be fine.
