Provided After months of planning, the members of the Summerville Cricket Club hosted their first pair of games at Gahagan Park.

The Summerville Cricket Club is up and running.

The club kicked off its inaugural season by hosting the Charlotte Warriors, a Division One team, Oct. 26-27 at the Jerry Blackwell Athletic Complex. It was a sound start as Summerville claimed back-to-back victories.

“Ultimately over 800 runs were scored in two days proving the worth of the new wicket,” club founder Geoff Hawes said.

“It made for exciting cricket — both games were close. It was great entertainment for all who came out to support and winning both games was a really good way to start the ball rolling for Summerville Cricket Club. We are working on more games with teams from out of town, which brings in additional business to the town of Summerville.”

In that Saturday’s 20-over game, Summerville batted first and posted a solid total of 195 with Sunju Patel scoring an impressive 86 from 32 deliveries and Hitesh Patel scoring 53. The Charlotte Warriors came back strong, scoring 187 in a gallant final 6-over charge but then ran out of overs.

Jinesh and Dhiral Patel were standout bowlers for Summerville and Steve Woodwood provided some outstanding fielding to help contain the Warriors.

In that Sunday’s 25-over game, the Summerville Sandlappers batted first again and posted another solid total of 241 with Harshel Patel scoring 67 and Jinesh Patel scoring 51.

The Warriors again came back well but ended up shy with a 234 total.

Julu, Sunju and Dhiral Patel were standout bowlers for Summerville.

The Summerville Cricket Club is making plans for a tournament Nov. 16-17 and needs both players and fans.

“We would love to get as many people out to watch as possible,” Hawes said. “These games are fast and furious action from start to finish so this is a great way to quickly become familiar with the game.”
