He knew by the time he was 12 that he wanted to be a surgeon. “I like working with my hands a lot,” says Dr. Gerald Warren. “I also like seeing a problem and making it better.” After graduating from St. Andrews High School, he went to The Citadel, where success demanded hard work, and continued on at the Medical University of South Carolina. During his first year in medical school, he married Torey, his high school sweetheart. (She went to rival Middleton High, and they met on a blind date.) After his residency in Wilmington, NC, they returned home to the Lowcounty and raised their three children as Dr. Warren built his practice through Summerville Surgical Associates. He was one of the first to perform surgery at Summerville Medical Center (SMC), and more than two decades later, he continues to do general and laparoscopic procedures, including gallbladder, appendix and hernia removal, as well as cancer and bowel surgery. In addition, he treats patients at SMC’s Advanced Wound Care Center. Dr. Warren likes to take his time with patients and wants them to feel comfortable asking questions.
