The Summerville Exchange Club has teamed up with a Lowcountry artist to commemorate the accomplishments of coaching legend John McKissick.

The coach has led the Green Wave varsity football program to 609 victories, and counting. That is more wins than any other coach at any level, from Pop Warner to the NFL, has accrued.

The Summerville Exchange Club, which has been the booster club for the Green Wave football program for years, has taken steps to ensure the entire Green Wave family will have the opportunity to share in that monumental success.

In anticipation of McKissick earning his 600th victory late last season, Jostens Ring Company designed a one-of-a-kind ring in his honor. Members of the club have since commissioned Lowcountry sculptor Marty Murray to reproduce the ring top in the form of a plaque so others can have their own keepsake to mark the occasion.

Club members say the plaque, entitled It Takes An Entire Family, represents the tireless and dedicated contributions players, parents, boosters and others put into the football program over the years.

“We wanted to do something to raise money but we also wanted to do something that would really incorporate anyone who has ever been involved with Summerville football and who has been a part of those 600 wins,” Summerville Exchange Club President Converse A. Chellis IV said. “This plaque isn’t just for Coach, it is for everybody who has been a part of the program.”

Orders for the handcrafted, limited-edition plaques can be placed at www.murrmadeofcharleston.com for $125 each. Some proceeds from sales will be used in support of Summerville Athletics.

Murray is a 1971 graduate of The Citadel, a former athlete and a serious sports fan. Prior to designing the plaque for the exchange club, the artist worked on similar projects for numerous colleges including Clemson University, College of Charleston and The Citadel.

He was on hand at the club’s meeting Tuesday to present his original It Takes An Entire Team plaque to McKissick.

“I was thrilled when they asked me to do the plaque,” Murray said. “John McKissick was the Summerville coach back when I was an athlete at St. Andrews High School. It is impressive he has been there so long and accomplished so much.”
