Summerville completed a clean sweep against Region 8-AAAA opponents Friday by earning a 38-28 win in Bluffton.

With the win, the Green Wave improved to 9-2 on the season with a 5-0 mark in region play and earned the No. 3 seed for the Class AAAA Division 1 playoffs. Summerville will open the playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Friday when they host Ashley Ridge, the No. 14 seed. Summerville will also host the next round if it advances.

Green Wave quarterback Sawyer Bridges carved up the Bobcat defense, completing 20 of 32 pass attempts for 329 yards and three touchdowns. The only blight on his performance was a sole interception.

Summerville kicker David Kennedy also had another outstanding night, going 3 for 3 on both field goals and extra-point kicks. His field goals were from 36, 22 and 34 yards. Kennedy also averaged 37.3 yards per punt during the game.

“Our kicker has really been valuable to us this season,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “We started a little slow the other night, but we kept chipping away at a pretty good Bluffton defense. We were steady and hung in there. I’m proud of our guys for not panicking.”

Bluffton (6-5, 2-3) had a great start as it marched up field to score on its first possession. Later in the opening quarter, Jawara Middleton returned a punt 92 yards to set up a 1-yard TD run that gave the Bobcats a 14-0 lead with the extra-point kick.

Then Summerville got its offense going.

The Green Wave got on the board with Kennedy’s first field goal late in the first quarter and then scored 10 points in the second to cut the Bluffton lead to a point at the half. Bridges connected with Johnston McCurry for a 7-yard TD reception and Kennedy hit a kick from 22 yards out before the half.

Summerville then outscored Bluffton 25-14 in the final two quarters.

Chris Felder gained 2 of his 96 rushing yards on the evening on a TD run early in the third quarter that was followed by Kennedy’s third field goal.

In the final quarter, Bridges connected with Donnell Bryan for a 31-yard touchdown and with McCurry on a 26-yard touchdown.

Bryan finished with seven receptions for 94 yards and McCurry had four for 83 yards. Both freshman Cameron Burnette and senior Sean Smith had just more than 50 receiving yards on the night.

The Summerville defense was led by the normal group as Mac McCurry had 17 tackles, Cody Soto had 11 and both Kevin Dickinson and Chad Wood had nine. Dickinson had an interception in the game.
