Dorchester School District Two has earned an absolute rating of “Excellent” and a growth rating of “Excellent” on the 2013 state report card released by the State Department of Education and the Education Oversight Committee November 8.
This is the 13th annual release of the state report card for all public schools and school districts in South Carolina and it is the first time Dorchester School District Two has earned an excellent rating in both categories. Out of the state’s 84 districts, only 18 districts earned an “Excellent” in both the absolute rating and the growth rating. Dorchester School District Two was the only Lowcountry district to receive this top rating.
Seventeen of the district’s 21 schools earned an absolute rating of “Excellent” and the other four schools had a rating of “Good.” Other highlights from this year’s report card include:
All three high schools had an “Excellent” in the absolute ratings
Rollings Middle School of the Arts has the fourth highest ranking among middle schools in the state with an absolute rating index of 4.19.
Only nine districts in the state had a higher Absolute Index than Dorchester District Two (3.73)
The State Department of Education has also released the 2013 graduation rate for the state’s high schools. Dorchester School District Two had a significant increase in the overall graduation rate with an 80.7, an increase of 4.2 percentage points over last year. All three high schools had increases over last year’s graduation rates with the following 2013 graduation rates: Ashley Ridge High, 83.3(a gain of +1.7); Fort Dorchester High, 82.8(a gain of +4.2); and Summerville High, 77.8 (a gain of +5.7).
“We are pleased that our schools continue to make gains through increased rigor in every classroom,” said Superintendent Joe Pye. “The performance gap is narrowing across the district as most all schools saw increases in student achievement. We are particularly pleased with the significant gains in our high schools and the large increase in the graduation rate of 4.2%. This indicates that Dorchester School District Two is well on the way to being a world class school system.”
