Charleston Police Sgt. Tony Person was killed early Saturday morning in a motorcycle crash on Dorchester Rd.
“Shortly after 1 a.m., Saturday morning, North Charleston Police Officers responded to the area of Dorchester Road and Trump St., in reference to an accident involving a motorcycle,” read a statement from NCPD PIO Spencer Pryor.
“Initial reports indicate a vehicle pulled out in the path of the cycle driver and he swerved to miss the vehicle. The cycle driver struck the rear quarter panel of the Dodge Journey and was struck by a second vehicle resulting in the fatality.”
According to Chief Deputy Coroner Alice Durr, “Tony W. Person, Jr. was traveling toward Summerville on Dorchester Road near the intersection of Trump Rd when the motorcycle he was riding collided with another vehicle. Mr. Person was pronounced dead on scene. The death has been ruled accidental.”
Charleston Police say Person, of Chemistry Drive, Ladson, has served the Lowcountry for 13 years. He was off-duty at the time of the accident.
Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen released this statement:
“The department is in shock from the news about the death of Sergeant Tony Person. We are mourning the loss of a dedicated police officer, father, and friend who will be dearly missed by everyone. Tony served the Department and community with honor, dedication, and humility.”
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
