Annual Event is Organization’s Largest Fundraiser

On Saturday, Nov. 23, a crowd of over 1,000 animal lovers is expected at Charleston Animal Society’s 14th Annual Celebrity Chili Cook-off and Oyster Roast at Joe Riley Stadium. Slated from 1PM – 5PM, the event will feature award-winning chili, “endless oysters,” local beers as well as non-alcoholic beverages. Music will be provided by Best Laid Plan, and attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a Kids Zone, a TV Football Zone, and a Game Zone. Charleston Animal Society will also have animals available for adoption and will be selling its “hot” 2014 Charleston Animal Society Firefighter Calendar, with special guest appearances by some calendar models.

The Chili Cook-off serves as Charleston Animal Society’s largest annual fundraiser. As Charleston’s only open admissions shelter, Charleston Animal Society takes in more than 11,000 community animals each year, making it far-and-away the Lowcountry’s largest animal rescue organization. They spend in excess of $500,000 annually treating injured, abused, and neglected local animals.

“When we unveiled our No Kill Charleston 2015 initiative, we made it clear that we could not do it without the support of the entire community,” explains Joe Elmore, CEO of Charleston Animal Society. “While we remain committed to that goal, our sheltering system has been experiencing severe overcrowding as we work to save every healthy and treatable animal that enters our doors. Our Celebrity Chili Cook-off and Oyster Roast is an ideal opportunity for the Charleston area to come to the aid of our community’s most at-risk animals all while spending a fun afternoon with friends and family.”

According to Charleston Animal Society’s Director of Community Engagement Kay Hyman, over 50 teams have signed up to compete.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door, and include all the oysters and chili you can eat. They can be purchased at www.CharlestonAnimalSociety.org or at their animal care campus located at 2455 Remount Road in North Charleston. Proceeds benefit Toby’s Fund, Charleston Animal Society’s medical fund for treating our injured and ill animals.
