Incidents of shoplifting are on the increase as we draw closer to the holidays. In spite of the myriad organizations that offer toys and food during the holidays, some apparently find it easier to help themselves.
Statistically, incidents of shoplifting appear to double in the months preceding the holidays.
Last year, in the months of July, August, Sept. and Oct. the incidents of shoplifting for the month were 11, 26, 34 and 21, respectively.
Then, in Nov. and Dec. of 2012, they doubled to 52 and 56, respectively, dropping back down to 39, 27, 36 in Jan. Feb. and March.
In April, May, June and July of 2013, they were at 42, 42, 40 and 32 and August, Sept. and Oct. of this year saw them at 34, 24, and 41.
Looking through the incident reports tells the story as more and more are for shoplifting, primarily at the “big box” stores such as Walmart, Belk and Target.
Walmart spokeswoman Kayla Whaling says its Asset Protection associates are very successful in apprehending and preventing loss through theft.
Chary of releasing information on how they prevent loss, she would only say “correct measures are in place on a store by store basis.”
Belk Store Manager Rajeer Mehra, however, said his store has a close working relationship with local police agencies. He also said excellent customer service was key in Belk’s success at keeping theft down.
“We are hiring extra help over the holidays,” he said. The extra help, according to Mehra, includes off-duty police officers in the store.
“We are doubling our resources from last year,” said Mehra, “and we have a very high apprehension rate.”
