Skaters beware … charges pending

Clearly posted: No skateboarding

Skateboarders using the Summerville town parking garage will need to bail.

Summerville Police are clamping down on skaters’ usage of the garage and, as of Jan. 1, will be issuing citations to anyone skateboarding in it.

“We will begin by giving warnings, over the next month,” said SPD Public Information Officer Jon Rogers. “But as of January 1, they will be charged.”

Rogers said there have been some near misses with skaters and cars colliding and it is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt.

He said the town is posting signs and giving the skaters a month to get the word out.

The town recently installed a purpose built skate park for skaters, which is at the corner of S. Magnolia and E. Richland Streets, just off the Berlin G. Myers Parkway. Skaters still using the town garage face fines of up to $1087.50 or 30 days in jail.
